Why Tools Rippo's DPI Checker Is More Accurate

Most online "DPI checkers" only look at pixel dimensions and assume 72 or 96 DPI. We go further.

🧬

Real Metadata Parsing

We read the actual JFIF density header and EXIF resolution tags in JPEGs, and the pHYs chunk in PNGs — the same data print software and cameras write — instead of guessing.

How to Use the Image DPI Checker

  1. Upload Drag and drop, click to browse, or paste an image directly into the page.
  2. Read the result The large number is the image's real detected DPI, along with a green (excellent), amber (fair) or red (low) print-quality badge.
  3. Check print sizes Scroll to see how large you can print it at professional quality, and how it performs at common sizes like 4×6, 8×10 or A4.
  4. Calculate a custom size Enter any dimensions to instantly see the DPI you'd get, or the pixel resolution required for a crisp 300 DPI print.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my image show 72 DPI when it looks high quality?

DPI metadata only describes an intended print scale — it does not affect on-screen quality or the pixel count of the file. Many cameras and editors default to 72 or 96 DPI regardless of resolution. What actually matters for printing is the pixel dimensions divided by your chosen print size, which is exactly what our Print Quality and Calculator sections show you.

What DPI do I need for professional printing?

300 DPI is the standard for sharp, professional prints such as photos and brochures. 150–200 DPI is acceptable for casual prints, while large-format prints like posters and banners viewed from a distance can look great at 100–150 DPI.

Does this tool change or edit my image?

No. This is a read-only analyzer. It measures metadata and pixel dimensions and never modifies, compresses, or re-uploads your file anywhere.

Why do some formats show "no embedded DPI found"?

Formats like WEBP, BMP, and GIF typically don't store a resolution tag at all, and many JPEGs/PNGs are exported without one too. When no tag exists, we clearly label it as an assumed default rather than presenting a guess as a fact — and you can still use the Calculator to work out true print DPI from pixel size.
